Scottish Blood, or more fully the Scottish Blood Transfusion Service, collects blood from donors and processes so it can be used for treatments within Scotland. The processing is carried out in a number of centres. A review was made of the potential for concentrating the processing in one centre.
Scottish blood also collects and process tissue, usually used in surgery or in transplants.
STC worked with Scottish Blood to define their requirements and set out the URS for the project and likely costs. The key issue is the ability to process large quantities, and to track donations that arrive late in the day. Quality control checks must be run on large numbers of samples at high speed, so the QC laboratories tend to have sophisticated automated instrumentation.
